Głogów is an ancient city of great historical significance, located in the northwest corner of the Lower Silesia region, on the western (left) bank of the Odra River.
The town's history can be traced back to the 10th-11th century, when a castle in defense of the western border of the Poles Empire was erected on the right bank – in the same area where a Slavic, fortified tribal settlement had hitherto been located.
The present city was founded in 1253 and remained under Polish rule until 1528.
From 1528 to 1741 Głogów belonged to Austria, from 1741 to 1945 under Prussia (Germany).
During World War II, the city was almost completely destroyed. The castle was rebuilt in 1971-83. From the beginning of 1980’the rebuilding began on the rest of the old town.
