Preface
The word monastery in Danish as well as klasztor in Polish comes from the Latin term claustrum, which actually means to beat or shutter, cf. the verb claudo (closes), clausum (a closed place), but which in medieval Latin becomes the term for a monastery, closed place or area, ie a space or institution that closes itself or in other words closes the outside world. Of the same origin is the word clause (of clausura, polish: klauzura), which partly denotes the fully enclosed part of a monastic complex, and partly the monastic rules governing the communication of the order brothers and sisters with the outside world. The concept of monastery does not only appear in connection with Christianity, but also in other religions. Monks and nuns in Poland as well as in other Catholic countries, incl. Denmark before the Reformation, chose the isolation and deprivation it brought, in order to immerse themselves in the faith and avoid the temptations of worldly life. But the monastic rules of the individual orders were diverse. The monastic life was in many cases combined with practical activities such as gardening and agriculture related to the monastery, intellectual work such as writing books or charitable activities in the local community such as nursing.
The Orthodox monasteries in Poland are denoted by the Polish word monaster (via East Slavic, thus Russian: monastyr’ from Greek: monasterion). Cf. also the English monastery).
In the Middle Ages and in the following centuries, predominantly up to and including the 18th century, a number of monasteries were erected in Poland – the first in the 9th century and many in the 13th century. Following the division of Poland in the late 18th century, the three occupying powers, but especially Prussia, at the turn of the century and in the early 1800s caused the destruction of a large number of monasteries. After the monks or nuns left the abandoned monasteries, the buildings were used for other, often mundane purposes, such as schools, prisons, public administration or otherwise. When Poland emerged as an independent – and Catholic – country after World War I, better times followed the monasteries, some of which were again taken over by the original monastic orders – or other orders, while new monasteries were being built. The widespread devastation during World War II also affected many monasteries. After the war – but especially after the end of the communist period in 1989 – a new revival of monastic life took place due to the strongly strengthened position of the Catholic Church in society.
This list includes monastery buildings in Poland stating the monks or nuns who run or run the monasteries – and locating the monasteries in the form of a place name that links to the city page in “Tourist in Poland”, when such a site is prepared. In addition, links to official city pages can be found in the list of Polish cities below “Tourist in Poland”.
These are existing buildings (2007), whether they are used today as a monastery or for other purposes. Former monastery buildings that have been demolished and subsequently completely rebuilt for other purposes have not been included. Historical buildings, of which there are no longer any traces or only insignificant traces, are not included. A single, more significant ruin (Oborniki) is included.
The information about monks and non-orders includes: 1) the name of the order (popular term) in Danish – as a heading; 2) Popular denomination in Danish for order brothers and sisters – in the main order and any subgroups or independent orders associated with the main order; 3) Similar designation in Polish; 4) the official name of the order in Polish; 5) The official name of the order in Latin (for Roman Catholic orders).
As a result of the above, a particular monastery and thus a locality may be mentioned under several orders, as both the order which originally governed the monastery as well as any subsequent order which has taken over the place have been attempted to be included.
The Danish word order derives from the Latin word – a stand or class. In Polish, the Slavic term zakon is used, for example: Zakon Cystersów. Other terms used for these communities of order are the Latin Congregation – an assembly (Polish: Kongregacja, Danish: Congregation). Example: Kongregacja Eremitów Kamedułów Góry Koronnej. However, in Polish, the Slavic word zgromadzenie is sometimes used instead of the Latin-derived Kongregacja; example: Zgromadzenie Męki Jezusa Chrystusa.
Attempts have been made to find and use common Danish names on the orders contained in the list. In a few cases, a Norwegian, Swedish or German designation has been performed.
The names of the Roman Catholic monasteries in Poland usually consist of the word monastery + the daily name of the order brothers / sisters in non-declining majority (it is stated in the order section in the mentioned case majority, eg benedyktyni). The daily names for order brethren are inflected in the case of a majority in this way: augustianie / augustianów, bonifratrzy / bonifratrów, benedyktyni / benedyktynów, cystersi / cystersów, dominikanie / dominikanów, franciszkanie / franciszkanów, bernardyni / bernardynów, bernardyni / bernardynów / kamedułów, etc. For example, the name of a Dominican monastery (monastery) becomes: “Klasztor Dominikanów”. – The names of order sisters (nuns) are inflected as follows: benedyktynki / benedyktynek, cysterki / cysterek, dominikanki / dominikanek, franciszkanki / franciszkanek, bernardynki / bernardynek, urszulanki / urszulanek, nazaretanki / nazaret, nazaretanki / nazaret Klasztor Cysterek”. Moreover, at nunneries the word is often added “sister”, thus: “Classist Sióstr Franciszkanek”. Alternatively, one can see the abbreviation ss before the name of the order. (= the sisters) or (less frequently) pp. (= the Misses) at nunneries and the abbreviation oo. (the fathers) at monastic monasteries, for example: Klasztor oo. Benedyktynów w Tyńcu.
Additions to this outline, prepared in March to August 2007, will probably emerge as pages on the individual Polish cities under “Tourist in Poland” continued. But reactions from users in the form of suggestions for additions and fixes are always very welcome.

Alphabetical listing of sites:
In this alphabetical list of sites, reference is made to the monastic order in question, ie to the main section of the list.
In brackets after the place name, the region (county name) is given in short, substantive form, thus “Lower Silesia” for: Lower Silesian Region = Województwo Dolnośląskie. This can lead to misunderstandings or doubts in a few places: “Pomerania” denotes here: The Pomeranian County = Województwo Pomorskie (which should really be called “The East Pomeranian County” in contrast to “The West Pomeranian County”); “Silesia” denotes: County of Silesia = Województwo Śląskie (which should really be called “Upper Silesian County” contrary to the aforementioned “County of Lower Silesia”); “Holy Cross” is a translation of: (Województwo) Świętokrzyskie, et “legitimately”, Polish region name in substantive form is not available in this case.
